Although Innes began exhibiting paintings in the UK right after leaving art college in 1985, he starting making waves in the art world having been shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1995. He won the prestigious Jerwood Painting Prize in 2002 and from then on has continued to establish a solid worldwide reputation. He was born in Scotland, where he continues to be based, but is familiar to Irish collectors through the Kerlin Gallery, which has mounted four solo shows of his work since 2000.
The juxtaposition of opposites gives Innes's work its visual tension. Opaque areas are in opposition to translucent ones; the perfection and hardness of the grid-like geometric composition are in opposition to the imperfections found in the fluid painted surfaces. In each of his pictures we see traces of the artist's struggle as he treads a fine line between keeping control while also being open to the accidental.
His technique of using turpentine to dissolve sections of paint while they're still wet, adding and subtracting as he goes along, leads to the creation of delicious shifting surfaces. Innes creates veils of colour that draw us into each painting.
