Austere, meditative, elegant and emblematic: words that are often used to describe Patrick Scott's work, can be aptly applied to this painting. His use of materials is spare, embracing the raw beauty of unprimed linen canvas, a thin wash of white tempera and the richness of gold leaf. The repetition of nearly transparent bands of curved lines imbues the piece with a gentle rhythmic flow. This 'fount' motif appeared frequently in Scott's work in the mid-1970s, from when Gold Painting 48 most likely dates. The artist never talked about his work as he felt that a painting was meant to be looked at, not explained. However, one cannot ignore the symbolic potency of the fount image: wellspring, source, origin. The strict symmetrical geometry of the composition gives it a serene contemplative feel, Scott having condensed a moment of poetry from the clutter of visual reality.

The richness of the central band of gold against the rawness of the bare canvas has enormous appeal. Scott said he first 'met gold' working for the architect Michael Scott on the refurbishment of a building in the mid-1940s when he needed to apply gold leaf on a decorative feature. This, and visits to Venice and Ravenna in the '50s and '60s, led him to experiment with this material in his own work. Laying gold leaf against raw canvas eventually became the defining feature of Patrick Scott's paintings. His genius was the ability to retain variety and a freshness of vision within the narrow parameters set for himself.

    IF A BID IS RECEIVED WITHIN THE FINAL 45 SECONDS OF THE COUNTDOWN THE CLOCK WILL RESET TO 60 SECONDS. 

    At any point you can leave a maximum bid, representing the highest price you are prepared to pay for a particular lot. Bidding only advances when there is competition from a rival bidder. In that case the system bids on your behalf, only up to the maximum if required. All bids are relayed to you be email, along with notification if you have been outbid. 
     
    All maximum bids are confidential and not disclosed. The system will endeavor to purchase the lot for you for the least price. Bids are subject to buyer’s premium of 25% (incl vat), with no additional charges.

    In the event of a tied bid, the preference will be given to the bid submitted first. The second bidder will receive immediate notification of being outbid.
