Cecil Maguire

Cecil Maguire was born in Armagh and studied art at Queen’s University Belfast. He is best known for his figure painting and landscapes.

He became an art teacher and painted in his spare time until in 1981 when he left his teaching post to pursue his first passion and dedicated his time completely to his art practice. He exhibited in the Royal Ulster Academy from 1971 and became a member in 1974. He travels often and divides his time between Italy, Belfast and Connemara, the latter of which is a regular reference point in his visual art practice.

Among his achievements, he won the RUA silver medal twice, in 1964 and 1967 and the Gold Medal in 1974. He won the Conor Prize in 1968. He is in a number of important collections including the United Nations Headquarters, New York; The Department of the Environment, Northern Ireland; The Ulster Museum, Belfast; Queens University, Belfast; Aer Rianta, Dublin; Provincial Bank of Ireland and The National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland.
