Lot 112 - TULIPS IN A VASE by Joan Jameson Lot 112 Joan Jameson TULIPS IN A VASE
Estimate: €1,000 - €1,500
Joan Jameson, 1892-1953
TULIPS IN A VASE
Oil on canvas 24" x 20" (61 x 50.7cm).

Provenance: The artists family, and by descent to the current owner.

Born in London in 1892 Joan Jameson was the eldest daughter of Sir Richard and Lady Musgrave of Tourin, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford and studied at Academie Julian in Paris. Jameson had a large and varied social circle, with many friends from the artistic and literary community. These included Norah McGuinness and Molly Keane. One of Jameson's closest friends, McGuinness was a frequent guest at Rock House, Ardmore. In spite of their close friendship, Joan and Norah were two vastly different painters. 'Their paintings were as different as the backgrounds of their lives - Norah fought her way into painting - In her young days she lived on a very sparse income, though always with grace and distinction. Joan found her way into painting against the time-consuming social life in which she was born and brought up.' Molly Keane notes that despite her gift and understanding, Jameson was an unwilling painter. She would often wander unwillingly to her studio and welcome interruptions. Nevertheless, once her concentration was focused, her strength was indefatigable. She would paint cautiously with her brush pushing its way as it followed her eye onto the canvas.

Jameson preferred to exhibit in London due to the greater choice of venues for exhibiting. Three London galleries showed her work; the Goupil, The Wertheim and the Leicester with two solo shows in 1933 and 1937. In Ireland, Jameson was a member of the Dublin Painters Society exhibiting regularly from 1938-48. As a talented and prolific artist, Jameson received critical attention in particular in 1943 when exhibiting with the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, showing there until 1953. Among others, Edward Sheehy described Jameson as a painter of 'courage and distinction'. Jamesons' work was further shown at a 1989 retrospective at the Crawford Art Gallery and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
