Tony O'Malley and his wife Jane returned from Cornwall to Ireland in 1990 to live and work near his birthplace in Physicianstown, Co.Kilkenny. They built a large studio and a pond at the bottom of their luxuriously planted garden. From season to season both pond and garden provided an ever-changing source of subject matter. It is likely that Lochan Agus Speir ('Pond and Sky') was inspired by the luminous, sparkling patches of sky reflected on the surface of this very pond.
It was painted in November, the cool colours consistent with the frosty feel of the water. O'Malley is known for his use of texture, scraping and incising the board and also embedding particles in the paint. Here it's used to conjure up the feeling of things (plants, weeds, debris) floating above and below the pond's surface. O'Malley has created a composition that seems to be in motion, where wind makes the water ripple and swirl.
