Tony O'Malley's paintings encapsulate his sensory experience of a place or event: seeing plus feeling. It's not unusual for his landscapes to be influenced by the sound of birds, music coming from an open window, the heat in a Bahamian sky, the feeling of a brisk breeze, the smell of fragrant foliage.
O'Malley was an amateur musician himself who often found 'music' in the many sounds of nature. However, in Homage to John McCormack the artist has taken this a step further by focusing on his experience of listening to this famous Irish tenor sing. There is a flowing musicality to the abstract composition: a lightness of touch, an appealing clarity and velvety richness. In his tribute to McCormack one can't help but sense the artist's joy and of being transported to another realm.
