Lot 51 - THE PUBLIC SPEAKER by Patrick O'Reilly Lot 51 Patrick O'Reilly THE PUBLIC SPEAKER

THE PUBLIC SPEAKER (1995)
Cased box, 160cm (h) x 114.3cm (l) x 46cm (d),

I first met Patrick O Reilly about 20 years ago. I invited him and his wife to a dinner in the RHA. After dinner he invited the group back to his house for a night cap. I remember his own creations were everywhere. The first thing I saw as I came in to the house was an open coffin up against the wall, with a skeleton peeping out. Through into the kitchen I was greeted by an old open leather suitcase housing two full size hens, one wearing a holster and gun, on to the garden where a group of fiberglass hens were looking at me. I now knew I was dealing with a true original.

In those days two of Patrick's works were on display in the Municipal Gallery.. in the entrance hall was a large mangle with a groom halfway through the press, the legs of his morning suit like a perfectly ironed napkin. In one of the rooms another piece; the breathing suitcase.. an old leather case hanging from the wall, an old tie hanging out and the case inflating and deflating like the human heart!

Many know Patrick as a supreme maker of bears, but there is so much more. I was thrilled when a friend discovered the public speaker.. so reminiscent of early pieces I had seen. I am sure it was relevant all those years ago but how relevant it is in today's world.
