Gerry Walker, 'Amanda Doran', Irish Arts Review (Autumn, 2012) p. 81, illustrated, and illustrated again on front cover.

Ever since her degree show at NCAD in 2012, Doran, originally from Wexford, has been hailed as a remarkable talent. Together with artists such as Genieve Figgis and Diana Copperwhite she has carved out a distinctively female space in what has been for too long the male-dominated sphere of gestural painting. Here she takes her title from the tradition of the circus 'freak' shows including 'tattooed ladies' who, by showcasing their tattooed bodies often in scantily clad clothing, transgressed Victorian gender norms. The picture was included in the seminal 2013 exhibition New Order: British Art Today at the Saatchi gallery in London, when it was noted that 'The too-muchness of her painting is part of its vision of unselfconscious abundance: excess is the point'.

As Ben Street writes in the catalogue to the Saatchi show 'Amanda Doran's paintings seem especially concerned with taste - specifically, bad taste, and the limits of the conventionally acceptable in the painted subject. Taking as her subject images of the physically grotesque, Doran loads on the paint with appropriate abandon, wet in wet: her works are thick with gooey slathers of dirty brown and sick pink.'

Tattooed Lady, has become one of Doran's most familiar works, epitomising her radically fresh approach to expressionist painting. Ben Street continues to note the paradoxically decorative qualities that Doran finds in unpromising material: 'In Tattooed Lady the subject's bulk transforms the space around her: space is flattened, and the complex arabesques of the decorated thighs seem to continue in the carpet and the curtains.'

Writing in the Irish Arts Review in 2012, the critic Gerry Walker noted Doran's distinguished pedigree and the powerful emotional impact of her work: 'Stylistically, she can be located within an expressionist mode reminiscent of the work of the Austrian artist Oskar Kokoschka….Like Kokoschka, her style of depiction is edgy and animated. Her figures exude feelings of psychic anxiety generated by a sense of otherness and alienation. They are existentially loud and hard-hitting and they do much to confirm the validity of paint as a contemporary medium.'

Sold with a copy of the Irish Arts Review, Autumn 2012, in which the painting features on the cover.
