Elizabeth Rivers, 1903-1964
STUDY FOR OUR LADY OF THE APOCALYPSE
Watercolour and charcoal, 33" x 48" (83.8 x 121.9cm).
This is a full-sized study for one of Elizabeth Rivers most important late oils. It reflects the influence of the artists time c1948/55 working with Evie Hone in her stained glass studio at Marley in Rathfarnham. Dr SB Kennedy has written 'As with much of Rivers work the composition is rich in symbolism but unusually for her it is divided into a number of separate scenes. In the centre stands the Virgin on a crescent moon crushing the evil forces of Satan represented by a coiled serpent below. To the left is the New Jerusalem above a group of menhir-like standing stones (which are thought to represent Mount Sinai); to the right is the Tree of Life a group of three women sleeping. As appropriate to the title of the work, the mood suggested by the painting is one of hope in revelation.
