Lot 49 - SEATED MAN by Basil Blackshaw Lot 49 Basil Blackshaw SEATED MAN
Estimate: €7,000 - €10,000
Basil Blackshaw RUA, HRHA, 1932-2016
SEATED MAN
Oil and pencil on paper, 17 1/2" x 11 1/4" (44.4 x 28.5cm), signed.

Provenance: Hillsboro Fine Art, Dublin (label verso).

Exhibited: Hillsboro Fine Art, 'Blackshaw/ Graham/ Warren', Dublin February-April 2018.

From the first moment I saw the image of 'Seated Man' by Blackshaw, I thought of the time he demonstrated to me how he used to 'cup' a fighting cock for weighing. The sitter in this case, well known Northern Ireland architect Cecil Dunbar, comes across to me as if Basil is also weighing him in the sitter's chair.

This charming work executed in 1990 by Blackshaw was yet another painting of a family friend - The Dunbars, Beth and Cecil, who were originally friends of Basil's partner, Helen.

Dunbar was a painter himself who rejoiced in not just knowing Blackshaw but Basil's daughter tells me he loved dropping into her father's studio on Rough Lane outside Antrim to see the latest creation on his easel.

Returning to the sitter's disposition I love how, despite that air of authority which he emits Dunbar still appears 'cowped up in the chair.'

One cannot dismiss the mischief residing in Blackshaw. That is what made his company

so compulsive.

It is so reassuring to be be able to confirm that this work came directly from the artist's estate and before coming to the market was in possession of Anya Blackshaw, the artist's daughter.
