Estimate: €7,000 - €10,000
Rodrigo Moynihan RA, 1910-1990
PORTRAIT OF FRANCIS BACON
Oil on canvas, 29 1/2" x 29 1/2" (74.3 x 74.3cm).

Memories of a Summer in London as a young portrait painter.

When I was a painting student of 20 years old I had the good fortune to meet Rodrigo Moynihan in London. This was the mid 1980's and I was in London for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Rodrigo was born in 1910 so he was a painter of 74 at the time.

We met in the wonderful courtyard of the RA under the sculpture of Joshua Reynolds by chance. We talked and began a most informative conversation about the great man and founder of the RA. I did not know immediately who Rodrigo was but knew he was someone of great knowledge from our chat. We introduced ourselves and I recognized his name  as I had already been aware of Rodrigo's distinguished portraiture.

Rodrigo had been Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art until 1958. We discussed Dublin and his life long friendship with Irish artists Francis Bacon and Louis le Brocquy. He told me he had given Bacon a studio to work in at the RCA in the late 1940's. This is why the RCA have a Bacon Painting in their art collection.  Bacon gifted the painting to the college for the use of the studio for a year's rent I was told.
