Lot 16
Patrick Scott
POPPY FIELD THAILAND, 1987

Estimate:
€4,000 - €6,000
Patrick Scott HRHA, 1921-2014
POPPY FIELD THAILAND, 1987
Acrylic on unprimed canvas, 24" x 24" (61 x 61cm), signed, inscribed and dated 1987 verso.
Patrick Scott was at the forefront of Irish Modernism, going against the grain of conservatism that dominated the post-war Dublin art scene. However, his austere pared down aesthetic separated him from most of his contemporaries. These qualities of restraint and order were to remain a constant throughout his career. Although nearly all of the artist's paintings avoid the depiction of specific scenes, in the 1980s Scott frequently introduced a window motif that gave a brief glimpse onto the real world. Often focusing on nature (e.g. heather in Wicklow, a coconut grove in Mexico), here we have a delightful poppy field from the artist's visit to Thailand. Unsurprisingly, even with these organic plant motifs, Scott finds an underlying geometry. The flowers in Poppy Field are reduced to simple stylised shapes, repeated in a joyful staccato. The window is an area of unexpected colour and playfulness set against the restraint of the rest of the canvas. Its lightness and sense of joy make the painting particularly endearing.
