Lot 55 - POOLBEG LIGHTHOUSE, DUBLIN by William Sadler II Lot 55 William Sadler II POOLBEG LIGHTHOUSE, DUBLIN
Estimate: €8,000 - €12,000
William Sadler II, c.1782-1839
POOLBEG LIGHTHOUSE, DUBLIN
Oil on panel, 18 1/4" x 25 1/4" (46.2 x 64.1cm).

Here Sadler paints one of his favourite subjects, the lighthouse which since September 1767 has terminated the Great South Wall in Dublin Bay. Initially lit by candles, this was later replaced by oil as a source of light and Poolbeg became one of the first lighthouses in the British Isles to be illuminated in this fashion. Here Sadler records its appearance 'squat and white with an observation gallery towards the top' before it was rebuilt to its current design in 1820 (Brendan Rooney, Sadler's Wall, (Bethesda, Maryland, 2004). Speculating on the subject's appeal to the artist, Dr Rooney writes 'Sadler surely shared his interest in and affection for the South Wall with many Dubliners…His fascination with the South Wall was manifest not just in his revisiting of the theme, but also in the variety between the pictures'. The present work shows one of his preferred angles, elevating the viewer 'impossibly over the choppy water so characteristic of Dublin Bay' (ibid., 6).
