Lot 6 - ROADSIDE GRASSES, DONEGAL by Norah McGuinness Lot 6 Norah McGuinness ROADSIDE GRASSES, DONEGAL
Estimate: €20,000 - €30,000
Norah McGuinness HRHA, 1901-1980
ROADSIDE GRASSES, DONEGAL
Oil on canvas, 19 3/4" x 27 3/4" (50.2 x 70.5cm), signed and dated '69.

Provenance: The Dawson Gallery, Dublin (label verso).

Encouraged by Evie Hone and Mainie Jellett to study in Paris between 1929 and 1931, Norah McGuinness absorbed Cubism but soon adapted it to her own decorative, semi-abstract style.  Roadside Grasses has all the characteristics that we immediately identify with the artist: the shallow flattened space of Cubism, an underlying geometry and a crisp formal order strengthened by her use of strong dark outlines.

In Roadside Grasses we can see how the angularity of Cubism has been softened in a way that is totally compatible with the Irish countryside and its mounds of turf, cocks of hay and meandering paths. The compact composition fits together with interlocking shapes, having the satisfying effect of feeling 'just right', with all the parts working in unison. McGuinness finds patterns in nature, repeating shapes so that paintings like this one have an underlying beat or rhythm.

An especially appealing aspect of this painting is the way the artist has treated the grasses, a sparkling riot of texture that contrasts with the rest. The spikey grasses and fenceposts give us a visually satisfying counterpoint to the rounded shapes that dominate the rest of the composition. McGuinness has taken a normally unremarkable roadside view and has turned it into a painting with visual drama and undeniable forcefulness.
