Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg™ in 1958 for the lobby and reception areas of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark's first skyscraper. The commission to design every element of the hotel building, including the furniture, was the designer's grand opportunity to put his theories of integrated design and architecture into practice. The Egg is one of the triumphs of Jacobsen's total design - a sculptural contrast to the building's almost exclusively vertical and horizontal surfaces. The Egg chair was a curving organic form, designed to provide comfort and an element of privacy for the sitter in the otherwise public space of the hotel's lobby.
Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) is one of the best-known designers of the 20th century and one of the pioneers of modern Danish design. Born in Copenhagen in 1902, he studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and, from the 1930s, was a trailblazing architect, creating landmark Functionalist buildings such as Aarhus City Hall and St Catherine's College, Oxford. He is most famous for his chairs, which championed functionality and new materials.
'The Egg' sprang from a new technique, which Arne Jacobsen pioneered: a strong foam inner shell beneath the upholstery. Like a sculptor, Arne Jacobsen strived to find the shell's perfect shape by experimenting with clay to perfect the design.

At any point you can leave a maximum bid, representing the highest price you are prepared to pay for a particular lot. Bidding only advances when there is competition from a rival bidder. In that case the system bids on your behalf, only up to the maximum if required. All bids are relayed to you be email, along with notification if you have been outbid.
All maximum bids are confidential and not disclosed. The system will endeavor to purchase the lot for you for the least price. Bids are subject to buyer’s premium of 25% (incl vat), with no additional charges.
In the event of a tied bid, the preference will be given to the bid submitted first. The second bidder will receive immediate notification of being outbid.
