KIRWANS LANE

Oil on board, 36" x 16" (92 x 40cm), signed.

"The first experience of the West of Ireland provided this emotional jolt.  When we moved there in the early sixties it was like entering some sort of time warp.  Like moving back to a time when I was a small boy in Co; Armagh.  I recalled my grandparents walking in from the country with the main form of transport being the bicycle or the donkey and cart.  I felt that I was coming in at the end of an era in Irish life.  Attempting to paint it was exciting.  Returning to my English poets, I often use a line from Dante Gabriel Rossetti's work to encapsulate my attitude to painting.  In a sonnet on the history of the sonnet Rosetti said "A sonnet is a moment's monument".  It is an attempt to capture the emotion, the excitement of that experience, whether at home or abroad.  In an exhibition I hope that some of that emotion can be shared by those looking at the paintings.  It is not the only way to paint but it has been my approach for over fifty years.

In recent years I have been able to buy back some of my early work.  Perhaps this was an attempt to buy back some of those moments in an earlier life.

When we started in the Lurgan Art Club in the fifties we wondered if any of us would be painting in twenty years time.  Today, looking back, fifty years doesn't seem so long."
