Although for many years Kilkenny-born Doherty divided his time as a practicing artist between Australia and Ireland, he is now living in West Cork. He initially trained as an architect, so it's not surprising that he continues to be fascinated by the built environment. Painting in a photo-realist style, Doherty is drawn to neglected structures (old shops, pubs, derelict warehouses, etc.) that seem to be left behind. These are starting points for exploring the overlooked beauty of their richly textures surfaces and for uncovering hidden elegance in their linear patterns. Sometimes Doherty introduces a playful element by imagining some human qualities in his inanimate subjects. Two obsolete petrol pumps might be thought of as an old couple, some weathered buoys as a family group.

The Ballerina is beautifully constructed, the piece held together by strong interlocking geometric shapes that are enlivened by a rhythmic repetition of thin vertical lines. Against this, Doherty unexpectedly uncovers the grace and elegance of a dancer. Although we might be initially drawn into the painting by its technical virtuosity, the artist holds us there by creating a haunting image that speaks to us of loneliness, vacancy and obsolescence.
