The ability to define precisely the nature of different materials and objects and to contrast them with one another, as here, is characteristic of Sleator's still-life work at its best. The well-worked paint surface illustrates his technical virtuosity and the composition, in concept and execution, stands in a long line of still-life painting stretching back to the Dutch and Spanish painters of the seventeenth century.
