Jack Butler Yeats RHA, 1871-1957
CARTOON FOR A BANNER, PROBABLY ST. BRENDAN (c.1928)
Watercolour & mixed media on light brown paper, 61 1/2" x 42" (156 x 106.5cm), inscribed with notes detailing colours to be used.

Provenance: Dawson Gallery, Dublin, Sotheby's, 16 March 1977 (Lot 128); James Adam, Dublin, 1978; Private Collection.

Literature: Hilary Pyle 'Jack B. Yeats: His Watercolours, Drawings & Pastels' No.727 (p.171), which states:

A design for a banner, similar in style to the cartoons for the Loughrea banners, 447 ff. It has been carried out with great proficiency, on nearly twice the scale, and is probably much later in date, contemporary with the banners commissioned by Mrs. Oliver St. John Gogarty for Renvyle House, Co Galway, c.1930. The identity of the figure in the design is uncertain. He is bearded with a halo, about four feet high, wearing a red tunic with blue collar; and he stands, holding a staff, beside the prow of a currach. Part of the design for a border, formed of intertwined ropes, has been carried out in the top left hand corner.

The figure may be St. Brendan, though in the Loughrea version he is represented wearing a brown habit and is already at sea in his coracle, as he is usually seen in pictorial versions of the legend. Alternatively it might be St. Colmcille, who was of royal blood and might have been imagined wearing a tunic for the journey of his exile in Iona. Again, he may be some other Celtic saint.

The cartoons for the four Gregory banners have not been traced. The subjects commissioned were St. Colmcille, St. Francis, St. Gobda or Gobnait and the Blessed Virgin (the St. Francis and the Blessed Virgin banners being seen last in the collection of Mrs. D. Williams, Tullamore, in 1968 worked in wool on silk poplin, each measuring 78.5 x 50, while the St. Colmcille is in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland. There is a possibility that this was a version of the S. Colmcille banner which was rejected in favour of a replica of the Loughrea banner, or, given its size, it may be quite separate from the Gogarty commission. The design is not known to have been executed.
