Exhibited: Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The Scottish Arts Council, Colin Middleton Retrospective 1960-1970, September 1970-March 1971, catalogue 28.

During the 1960s Colin Middleton turned away from the more expressionist and exuberant manner of painting in which he had worked in the late 1940s and 1950s, towards a more considered form of abstraction that could be seen in part as a reassertion of the interest in design that had been formed in his early days working in the linen industry. Each of these two aspects of Colin Middleton's creative identity became more dominant at different periods of his career and the dynamic between them contributed in part to the constant progress and experimentation in his work, without it ever losing its consistency of purpose and personality.

Gables, Ardglass is one of a series of paintings Middleton completed around 1967 that are almost constructivist in style and recall his stated admiration for Victor Pasmore. While most of this series are concerned with asserting a formal and thematic closeness between the landscape and the female form, the present work is unusual in concentrating on buildings in a landscape, its architectural structure mirroring the architectural inspiration.

Many of Middleton's greatest expressionist works were painted when Middleton was living in Ardglass between 1948 and 1952, and he rarely returned to the area for subject matter in his later work. It is particularly intriguing in this instance given the distance between the two manners of working. This is a highly geometric work, largely without the softer lines and organic shapes that Middleton often introduced into his abstract painting. Within a muted palette, notes of colour are carefully introduced and the line that both relates to, and expands the strong shapes of the composition suggests the incised lines that had become significant for a number of contemporary British artists.
