Lot 1

DHU VARREN CHARIOT
Estimate:
€1,000 - €1,500
Colin Middleton MBE, RHA, RUA, 1910-1983
DHU VARREN CHARIOT, c.1960
Oil on wooden panel, 6" x 6" (15.2x15.2cm).
Provenance: The Artist's Studio Sale; Christies, London, 4 October 1985, (lot 203); Dickon Hall, Belfast (label verso).
In the late 1950s Middleton had received a number of commissions for mosaics and murals from the architect Noel Campbell, which might also have inspired him to explore a more playful and sculptural aspect within his painting.
Many of these works were inspired by the north coast and the area around Portrush and Dhu Varren, where he lived at the time, though this particular panel may be slightly later.
