Lot 38 - WALK OF THE HORSE by Basil Blackshaw Lot 38 Basil Blackshaw WALK OF THE HORSE

WALK OF THE HORSE
Oil on paper, 11 1/2" x 16 1/2" (29.2 x 41.8cm), signed.

It is interesting that Blackshaw did not call this painting of a horse, 'A Horse Walking.' Naming this work 'Walk of the Horse,' is very deliberate to underscore the action of a horse walking.

This oil on paper is a study which Blackshaw made for a large oil of the same subject hanging in a private collection also called 'Walk of the Horse.' I saw it being made in Blackshaw's studio and later saw it hanging in the FE McWilliam Gallery in Banbridge. No artist knew more about horses than Blackshaw. His father handled horses all his life and Basil was brought up with horses, riding and 'breaking' them from his childhood years. He loved horses and could literally talk  to them.

'Walk of the Horse' was a departure in treatment of Blackshaw's portrayal of horses. He had painted horses 'over fences' 'at the Start' 'Falling' and in every other conceivable way but in 'Walk of the Horse' is was all about capturing that unique deliberate movement of the animal without any frills or performance.

In order to allow rival bidders the opportunity to respond to a late bid the following extensions will apply:
IF A BID IS RECEIVED WITHIN THE FINAL 45 SECONDS OF THE COUNTDOWN THE CLOCK WILL RESET TO 60 SECONDS.

At any point you can leave a maximum bid, representing the highest price you are prepared to pay for a particular lot. Bidding only advances when there is competition from a rival bidder. In that case the system bids on your behalf, only up to the maximum if required. All bids are relayed to you be email, along with notification if you have been outbid.

All maximum bids are confidential and not disclosed. The system will endeavor to purchase the lot for you for the least price. Bids are subject to buyer’s premium of 25% (incl vat), with no additional charges.

In the event of a tied bid, the preference will be given to the bid submitted first. The second bidder will receive immediate notification of being outbid.
