Any invitation to write about a work of Basil Blackshaw is not unlike the birth of another grandchild or that 'ding' on the phone followed by the single word 'landed' alerting me to the fact that a member of the family has touched down safely somewhere in the world. Happiness is the greatest gift that we possess. Blackshaw spreads happiness.

I have seen many paintings over the years of 'Jude', Basil Blackshaw's model. It is fair to say Jude and Basil were kindred spirits. They were both impish and full of fun.

They shared so many anecdotes with me about each other in different circumstances. On one occasion Basil regaled me with his account of a train journey with Jude to Portstewart for the day. He brought the camera with him and walking along the shoreline he dared Jude to hang naked from the rocks. Jude being Jude stripped off and posed in every which way, Basil capturing all of this on camera. They then retired to a local hostelry where like two children they giggled and tee-heed over the images not exercising too much discretion in the presence of the gawking locals. Jude fell asleep on the train home and Basil snapped her again.

Once I clapped my eye on this image 'Head' (Jude) by Blackshaw I thought of Chagall. Chagall was a Russian Jewish French artist considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists".

Just this week I spotted one of Chagall's early works, a portrait of his father called 'Le Père' is coming to the market in Phillips' Auction in New York.

The connection between the two painters is the gay abandon with which both Chagall and Blackshaw play with paint and colour. Perhaps former distinguished Irish Times Art critic, Brian Fallon, crystallised this aspect of Blackshaw's style best when he said of the Northern Ireland artist that he had to come from somewhere to end up where it landed.
