Born in Castlebar, Richard King studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art under Sean Keating. On completing his studies, King was introduced to Harry Clarke by Austin Molloy. King joined the Harry Clarke Stained Glass Studios and became chief designer of the studios on Clarkes' death in 1931.
Alongside a number of acclaimed stained glass works in Ireland & abroad, King was a talented illustrator and designer, illustrating the Capuchin Annualfrom 1940-1972 and designing twelve stamps for the Irish Government.
Throughout his life Richard King produced a number of oil paintings. It has been suggested this particular work is of The Harry Clarke Studios at 6/7 North Frederick St and the dominating figure examining the stained glass is Clarke, King's mentor, himself.
