Provenance: The original owner of this painting, Theresa Long, is the young woman in the centre-background of the painting with a chequered shawl on her shoulders removing a loaf of bread or some other object from a shelf in a press. She is looking towards The Seanachai.
The background to her inclusion in the painting is that in 1944 after completing her Leaving Certificate, she travelled to Inisheer in the Aran Islands for her summer holidays with her uncle/aunt, who were teachers on the island. Her island holiday coincided with the visit of Gaetano De Gennaro, who had sought refuge on the island, and applied his talent to painting pictures of the local islanders. Presumably he came across Theresa on the island and invited her to pose for him.
