A Neapolitan bronze fountain, 19th Century 'after the antique', of a seated fisherman.
Well-cast 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze figure of a fisherman from the statue excavated at Pompeii in 1823. Discovered at the site of the Casa Della Fontana Piccola" where it sat on the brink of the piscina of a shell and mosaic grotto, the sculpture depicts a seated study of a fisherman astride a rocky outcrop with a Bacchus mask fountain-spout beneath him. The figure has a verdegris 'faux excavation' aged patination, and was probably produced by 'Chiurazzi et Fils' Foundry, Naples.
The figure is shown bare-footed wearing a loose-fitting robe, his hands poised, probably originally holding a rod.
