‘The Moderns at IMMA’ a must see

Posted on Jan 12, 2011

I went to see “The Moderns” Exhibition at IMMA the other day. What a treat to see so many really good – some great – Irish paintings hanging together, a real tonic for January blues. It certainly confirmed to me that Jack Yeats at his best was a truly great painter.

You will also see artists of quality like Doreen Vanston, Kenneth Hall and Thurloe Connolly. Interestingly, these artists fetch very modest amounts at auction.  In terms of Irish Art, quality does not always equal expensive.

Make sure you don’t miss it…..

Welcome to my new blog

Posted on Jan 10, 2011

As I move into my dotage friends and family have suggested I start a blog to share my views on art, the art market and all associated matters that arise from time to time. I have been immersed in Irish Art from a very early age, when in short trousers I would accompany my father to various auction houses and dealers, where he was always on the lookout for “something special”

From my early days in James Adams, to working with John Taylor and then setting up deVeres, I have been in the game a very long time. I have witnessed numerous market upheavals and seen many Artists scale great heights in auction room ‘fever’.

We are now going through different times and while there is a lack of supply of real quality items, there are buyers waiting to pounce if the right thing appears – all very exciting.
