London Auctions

Posted on Feb 07, 2011

Just back from London having viewed the Impressionist sales taking place this week. To see 300 million pounds worth of art is really something to behold. The quality of the art on view was very special, the auction rooms were pretty impressive as well. The still life by Gauguin in Christies would be my pick for over the fireplace.

I have looked for years for a good value hotel in London. My good friend Aidan Cavey, of Cavey Interiors in Bath Avenue, sent me to the Regency Hotel in Queensgate. It ticks all the boxes at a very keen price.

London’s Calling

Posted on Feb 04, 2011

Off to London today to view Bonhams and look at the other auction houses, where some really major Art works are going under the hammer next week. Always plenty going on in London, it’s good for the soul.

Our clearance sale on March 6th is really coming together. To date we have catalogued over 200 works and there are plenty of really nice things, including works by Tony O’Malley, Nick Miller, Elizabeth Magill, Doreen Vanston, etc . Our intention is to clear our store so don’t miss it. You will be able to pick up original pieces of artwork at very modest estimates.

Our next major auction is on March 30th and the quality is beginning to surface. This week we received in for auction this wonderful le Brocquy tapestry, “Cherub“, which dates from 1952 and was acquired from Leo Smith in The Dawson Gallery in 1972.

Also, this large Robert Ballagh, titled “L’Origine Du Langage”, commissioned  by Michael Fitzgerald in the early 1990’s for “The Commons Restaurant”, which was about to open in Newman House, on St Stephens Green. Michael wanted to celebrate James Joyce and specifically his masterpiece ‘Ulysses’ and asked Ballagh and other artists, including Michael Farrell, Tony O’Malley and Louis le Brocquy to paint a work based on this theme.

Entries for this auction close on March 1st, so give me a call if you would like to include anything. Talk to you next week, with news from London. Have a good weekend.
